Rivalry Renewed – Spartans, AU split non-league meeting

ANDERSON, IND. – Freshman Jacob Van Pelt added his name to Manchester University – Anderson University series lore Friday, March 23.

The Parker City, Ind., native, getting his first exposure to one of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's top diamond rivalries, stymied the host Ravens to the tune of one earned run on seven hits over five frames at Don Brandon Field. Coach Rick Espeset's offense added a strong cushion for the first-year hurler, as junior outfielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) ripped a double and triple as part of a three-hit, two-runs-scored, two-RBI nightcap and sophomore outfielder Quentin Rumsey (Auburn, Ind.) continued to impress in the early going with two hits in two at-bats to lead the way to an 11-3 victory.

The non-conference doubleheader opened well for the hosts. Anderson University posted seven tallies over the first four innings and didn't look back in route to a 7-3 victory over the Black and Gold. Senior outfielder Eric Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) had a big outing at the dish with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. On the mound, sophomore reliever Craig Overpeck (Rockville, Ind.) kept the Spartans close down the stretch, holding the Ravens scoreless while allowing seven hits over the final four and a third.

Manchester University (10-8) opens the league portion of its schedule Saturday, March 31. They travel to Hanover College's K.T. Young Ballpark for a 1 p.m. twin bill.
