RICHMOND, IND. – Junior second baseman Logan Hug (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior pitcher Sean Liedtky (Walkerton, Ind.) highlighted the final game of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series between Manchester University and Earlham College Sunday, April 27.
Liedtky, despite dipping to 3-4, dodged several Quaker offensive attempts over six and two-thirds innings, not surrendering an earned run, striking out two and walking just one. Hug guided the offense with two hits, as EC held off a Spartans' sweep attempt with a 5-2 win at Randal R. Sadler Field.
Liedkty and Earlham starter Zach Lee settled into a pitcher's duel early as neither side hit the scoreboard for the first three-and-a-half innings. Earlham managed to nick MU's starter for a key four-run rally in the fourth, fueled by an error and two hits. The league leaders pieced together the beginnings of a comeback in the eighth, plating two runs with help of an error and a sacrifice fly from sophomore third baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) but could get no closer.
Hug was one of five Spartans to produce a hit. Junior center fieldere Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.), senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.), senior right fielder Ryne Lehrman (Hoagland, Ind.) and sophomore catcher Elliott Ford (Rome City, Ind.) added singles to MU's total.
The Black and Gold (23-12 overall, 17-5 HCAC) open a four-game home stand to close out the 2014 regular season Tuesday, April 29. Indiana Tech visits Gratz Field for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
NOTES: Manchester University has a two-game edge on second-place and preseason conference favorite Anderson University with three games to play … Norris' and Maringer's safeties each increased impressive on-base strings. Norris has done so in 23 straight games, while Maringer has reached base in 14 successive contests.
