Spartans, Rose-Hulman clash at Gratz

Two of the top three teams on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings go head-to-head Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6, in North Manchester.

Series specifics: Rose-Hulman and MU are scheduled to play a pair of nine-inning games Saturday and a single nine-inning game Sunday at Gratz Field. Start times are set for 12 p.m. each day … Live audio will be available for the entire series via a link at, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … Manchester University, sporting a four-game win skein, stands 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the league and is tied with preseason favorite Anderson University for second. Rose-Hulman, harboring a string of nine straight wins, leads the conference at 7-0 and is 12-4 overall.

Spartan Shorts: Freshman Cory Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and senior Josh Copp (Sharpsville, Ind.) combined on a seven-hit, five-strikeout compilation to begin MU's week with a win at Anderson April 1. Ferguson, in his second collegiate start, surrendered just two earned runs on five hits over six and two-thirds innings. Copp, continuing to provide reliable work out of the bullpen, shutout the host Ravens on two hits and struck out two over the final two and a third innings … MU's offense supplied just enough support for a 4-2 decision. After the two sides each tallied a run in the fourth, and AU took a 2-1 lead with a single tally in the seventh, the Black and Gold pushed across three runs in the eighth … Junior shortstop Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) and sophomore third baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) each tallied two hits, while Knepper scored twice. They also each had an RBI, while junior outfielder Justin Miller and senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added the other runs-batted-in … Copp's impressive pitching statistics continue. He hasn't allowed a run in his last nine and a third innings of work, spanning four appearances, while freshman first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) increased his current on-base streak to nine straight contests Tuesday … This weekend's series with the Fightin' Engineers opens a four-game home stand for the Spartans. Defiance College of Ohio visits Gratz Field for a single, nine-inning game Tuesday, April 8 … It's been nearly dead even in recent history between MU and Rose-Hulman dating back through 2006. The Spartans hold a 14-13 edge in the span including winning two of three a year ago in Terre Haute.

On The Horizon: After Defiance College's visit April 8 at 4:15 p.m., Manchester University takes to the road for a weekend set at Franklin College April 11 and 12. Game times are 4 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday.
