ANDERSON, IND. – Freshman Cory Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and senior Josh Copp (Sharpsville, Ind.) combined on a seven-hit, five-strikeout compilation to help lead Manchester University to an important Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference road win Tuesday, April 1.
Ferguson, in his second collegiate start, surrendered just two earned runs on five hits over six and two-thirds innings. Copp, continuing to provide reliable work out of the bullpen, shutout the host Ravens (12-5, 5-2 HCAC) on two hits and struck out two over the final two and a third innings.
MU's offense supplied just enough support for a 4-2 decision. After the two sides each tallied a run in the fourth, and AU took a 2-1 lead with a single tally in the seventh, the Black and Gold (12-9 overall, 5-2 HCAC) pushed across three runs in the eighth.
After an error put junior second baseman Logan Hug (Indianapolis, Ind.) to open the frame, junior shortstop Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) resumed his power surge with an RBI triple. Sophomore third baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) drove in the eventual winning run with a single, while junior outfielder Justin Miller (Yorktown, Ind.) added an insurance marker with a sacrifice fly. The hosts attempted a comeback in their final at-bat with two hits but a pop fly to third with runners in scoring position closed out the contest.
Kimm and Knepper each tallied two hits, while Knepper scored twice. They also each had an RBI, while Miller and senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added the other runs-batted-in.
The Spartans, winners of four straight and five of their last seven, continue league play welcoming league-leading Rose-Hulman for a weekend series Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6.
NOTES: Copp's impressive pitching statistics continue. He hasn't allowed a run in his last nine and a third innings of work, spanning four appearances … Freshman first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) increased his current on-base streak to nine straight contests.
