Spartan Shorts: The weekend schedule, at Art Nehf Stadium on Rose-Hulman's campus, has a pair of nine-inning games beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday and one nine-inning contest starting at 1 p.m. Sunday. … It's a three-game set pitting the top two teams on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. Manchester University (23-4-1 overall, 13-2 HCAC), entering the week ranked No. 9 by D3Baseball.com and No. 13 by the American Baseball Coaches Association, leads Rose-Hulman (11-15 overall, 8-5 HCAC) by four games on the league standings. … The Black and Gold opened the week with a hard-fought 7-6, 10-inning loss to conference rival Anderson at Gratz Field April 16. The defeat snapped a 10-game overall and home field win streak. … Despite the defeat, the Black and Gold's strong rankings on the conference statistics' charts continued. Senior outfielder/pitcher Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) and sophomore second baseman Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) are four-five in batting average (Murphy - .398/Kimm - .391); junior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.), senior shortstop Corey Marchant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Kimm are among the top five in RBIs (Nieman first – 50/Marchant third – 31/Kimm fifth – 28); Nieman is second in home runs (five); Kimm and senior outfielder Cody Schell (Granger, Ind.) are four-five in stolen bases (T-4th – 13 each); Bryce Murphy, senior Justin Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and senior Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) are one, three and five in earned run average (Murphy – 1.24/Scott – 1.89/Konarski – 2.3); Konarski is tied for the wins' lead (six) as Murphy is in saves (seven). … The senior trio of Bryce Murphy, Marchant and senior first baseman Brad Murphy (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each harbor impressive on-base streaks. Bryce Murphy has reached in 33 consecutive games, while Marchant has done so in 29 successive dating back to last year, and Brad Murphy has a skein of 17 games straight where he's been on base. Kimm has a 10-game hitting and on-base string in the works, too. … The series has been nip-and-tuck in recent seasons. Rose-Hulman has a slim 13-12 edge dating back through 2006, but the two sides each went 2-2 against each other in 2012 and 2011.
