Six tabbed for Sport Scholar honor

Six Manchester University student-athletes were lauded as Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sport Scholar honorees.

Dasia Beck of Indianapolis, Ind., a junior member of the women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs; Samina Qureshi of Columbia City, Ind., a junior member of the women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field programs; Miriam Aly of Giza, Egypt, a senior member of the women's tennis program; Dzhwar Zirary of Erbil, Kurdistan, a sophomore member of the men's soccer program; Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie of Accra, Ghana, a junior member of the men's soccer program; and Haleigh Fernandez of Selma, Ind., a junior member of the women's golf program, were honored. To be considered, student-athletes must compete in an intercollegiate sport; have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher; be at least a sophomore or higher academically, and be active on their campuses or in their hometown communities.

Fernandez, earning her first award, was a first-team selection in women's golf; Aly, picking up her second accolade, was on the first team for women's tennis; and Qureshi and Beck, both being rewarded with their second mentions, were first and fourth team honorees, respectively, for women's track and field/cross country. Tetteh-Quarshie, gaining his second accolade, and Zirary, with his first mention, were both second-team men's soccer selections.
