Spartan Shorts: Going into the final weekend of qualifying for the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's men's squad has six events ranked on the league performance list top three. In the sprints, senior Harrison Hollis (Lebanon, Ind.) is second-fastest in the 100 (10.83 seconds) and 200 (22.19 seconds), junior Austin Coughlin (Fairland, Ind.) is third in the 100 (10.97 seconds), and freshman Nathan Weaver's (Goshen, Ind.) 16.23-second clocking at last weekend's Indiana Division III Championships is second-quickest. The 4x100 meter relay team's 43.34 effort April 13 at DePauw University's Blackstock Stadium in Greencastle, Ind., also ranks second. MU's jumps crew spotlights the field event top marks, as freshman Landon Balch (Rensselaer, Ind.) (six feet, two inches – high jump) and sophomore Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) (21 feet, a half-inch – long jump) each stand second … The Black and Gold's women's team has seven events in a similar range. Sophomore distance standout Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.), fresh off a track Athlete of the Meet award at the 2018 Indiana Division III Championships April 13, has the fastest times in the 800 (2:19.76) and 1500 (4:43.97) to spotlight the running events. The season's field event success is evident on the HCAC lists, as senior jumps specialist Paige Keller (Greenville, Ohio) stands second in the pole vault (11 feet, one and three-quarters inches); senior thrower Whitney White (Portage, Ind.) is tied for second in the shot put (38 feet, 11 and three-quarters inches); senior thrower Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) is third in the discus (128 feet, 11 inches); senior thrower Kara Breuckman (Crown Point, Ind.) has the second-longest hammer throw (154 feet, 11 inches); and Breuckman and junior Laina Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.) are two-three in the javelin with Boggs at 117 feet, nine inches ranking second and Breuckman's top toss of 111 feet, seven inches in third … In regards to the NCAA Division III performance list, Breuckman (hammer throw – No. 34) and Keller (pole vault – No. 42) are each among the top 50 … The Spartans aim for individual and team awards Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28, at the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Ind.
