Spartan Shorts – The southern trek begins a run of eight straight weeks of action for Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Brian Cashdollar's teams. They follow up the Hanover meet with a visit to Taylor University's George Glass Track and Field Complex Saturday, April 7, and then are part of the 2018 Indiana Little State Championships at DePauw University's Blackstock Stadium in Greencastle, Ind., Saturday, April 14 … A combined seven men's and women's athletes earned recognition on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Athletes to Watch section of the 2018 preseason coaches poll released earlier this month. The sprinting trio of senior Harrison Hollis (Lebanon, Ind.), junior Austin Coughlin (Fairland, Ind.) and freshman Travis Murr (Franklin, Ind.) joined sophomore jumps specialist Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) on the men's list, while sophomore distance runner Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.), junior sprinter Dasia Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior thrower Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) were noted for the women. Both programs were tabbed for fourth-place finishes … Cashdollar and his staff have reason to be optimistic for this spring's possibilities after an indoor campaign in which the men and women each took fourth in the conference, and the women's team had an athlete (Wappes) advance to the national championships for a fifth straight season. Other highlights included Wappes, in route to track Athlete of the year honors, sweeping the HCAC mile and 800; Cauhorn capturing the league shot put title; Murr, after placing runner-up in the 60 and 200 meter dashes, being honored as conference Freshman of the Year; and receiving a combined 10 men's and women's all-conference recognitions.
