Spartans set for 2018 HCAC Championships

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Individual and team honors are at stake Saturday, Feb. 17, as the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor track and field Championships are held at Anderson University.

Meet details: Events get underway at 1 p.m. at AU's Kardatzke Wellness Center … Fans, friends, and alumni can follow updates at https://twitter.com/MUSpartans, the official Twitter account of MU athletics … Coach Brian Cashdollar's women's program is riding a streak of three successive top-three finishes including winning the 2016 championship. The Black and Gold men's program has been among the first five teams in all but one of the previous HCAC meets. Top individual returners in regards to the league event for Manchester University are junior women's distance runners Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) and Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.) as they were each members of the top distance medley relay squad at Rose-Hulman's Fieldhouse last winter, while senior men's sprinter Harrison Hollis (Lebanon, Ind.) wound up fourth in the 60 meter dash a year ago.

Spartan Shorts: Cashdollar's crews go into the weekend standing strong in eight events where they have at least one athlete ranked on the current conference performance list top three. For the men on the track, freshman Travis Murr (Franklin, Ind.) and Hollis, who've been producing dueling school records over the past couple of weeks, are two-three in the 60 (Harrison second – 7.04 seconds/Murr third – 7.07 seconds) while Murr has the second-fastest time in the 200 (22.85 seconds). The duo has also played an essential role in getting the 4x200 relay to the loop's second-quickest effort (1:32.31). In the field, sophomore Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) has the second-longest leap in the long jump (21 feet, a half-inch). On the women's side of the ledger, junior sprinter Dasia Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.) has the fastest 60-meter time (8.18 seconds) and Wappes headlines the 800 and mile runs (2:22.69/5:10.85) on the track. In the field, the senior throwing combination of Jacey Cauhorn (Kendallville, Ind.) and Whitney White (Portage, Ind.) are one-two in the shot put (39 feet, four and a half inches/39 feet, two and a half inches) … While all eyes are focused on Saturday successes, the Spartans continue to track closer to the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships next month. Three events are listed among the top 100 with three weekends of qualifying remaining, as Hollis is 54th in the 60; Wappes is among the top 70 in the mile (No. 69); and Cauhorn stands 90th in the shot put … Manchester University points itself in the direction of Anderson University again Saturday, Feb. 24, for the Fred Wilt Invitational.
