Harris earns nationals’ berth, two tabbed all-region

POWELL, OHIO – Three individuals raced to top 60 finishes in the women's 6K, while senior Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added to his memorable 2017 campaign at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 11.

Harris, just two weeks removed from winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference individual championship, showed no signs of slowing down on a frosty morning at Liberty Park. He crossed the finish line in 25:46.1, good for a spot in the top 15 (No. 11) but more importantly taking one of the seven automatic individual entrances into the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships.

The all-region honoree led a 24th-place, 701-point total for the Spartans. The underclassman duo of freshman Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.) and sophomore Daniel Baker (Okemos, Ind.) were next to wind up their 8K events for Coach Geoff Lambert's squad, ending 141st and 148th, respectively.

Sophomore Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) guided the Black and Gold women's trio in the first 60 crossing in 23:09.2 to garner all-region accolades with a 26th-place ending. Fellow sophomore Emily Ewen (Wolcott, Ind.) was next in line, going across the finish line in 55th place (23:45.1), and junior Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.) added a 58th-place mark (23:52.3). The Spartans 441 point team total left them 16th as the highest-ranking Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference program.

Harris will compete at the national meet Saturday, Nov. 18, at the North Farm Facility venue in Elsah, Ill. Principia College is the institutional host.
