RICHMOND, IND. – Juniors Katie Smith (Wabash, Ind.) and Kaitlin Powers (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Haleigh Fernandez (Selma, Ind.) each found themselves in the top 10 at the conclusion of Earlham College's fall invitational Sunday, Oct. 2.
Smith played the Forest Hills Country Club course to an 18-hole 87, trailing only a pair of players from Indiana University – East for top honors in the medalist chase. Powers' round of 95 tied her for sixth, while Fernandez carded a 96 for eighth place. MU's 385 total left them trailing only IU-East on the team leaderboard.
Coach Tara Boone's men's squad was also in action at Earlham. Freshman Gian Dentis (Necochea, Argentina) led the way for the Spartans, shooting an 84. The score left him in the top 20 individually, as he tied for 19th. Dentis was followed by junior Jacob Hopkins (Kokomo, Ind.) and sophomore Connor Labedz (Aurora, Ill.) who tied for 27th with twin 88s.
On the team standings, the Black and Gold closed with a 354 over the 18-hole afternoon. Their total left them fifth in the field.
MU's men break from action until joining the women for the University of Illinois-Springfield's Island Getaway tournament in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Oct. 22-26. Manchester University's women's squad takes aim at individual and team honors Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9, as they compete in the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Hulman Links in Terre Haute, Ind.
