WABASH, IND. – Sophomore men's golfer Spencer Jackson (Greenwood, Ind.) and the trio of sophomores Kaitlin Powers (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Madison Yenser (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman Haleigh Fernandez (Selma, Ind.) turned in the top individual finishes for Manchester University at their spring invitationals Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17.
Jackson carded back-to-back sub-80 rounds of 75 and 76 for a 36-hole 151 total. The score, a personal season-best for the sophomore over 36 holes, left him tied for 19th in the 70-player field at Honeywell Golf Course. Following him for the Spartans, who placed 7th with a 625, was senior Dylan Burns (Lapel, Ind.) who wound up tied for 30th, also compiling back-to-back sub-80 rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154.
MU's women's squad saw Yenser wind up seventh (190), Powers place eighth (196) and Fernandez play to a 12th-place ending (206). Powers and Yenser both took strokes off their Saturday rounds with improvements of four (100-96) and 10 (100-90) shots, respectively.
Transylvania University's men, buoyed by a three-way tie for first, and Marion College of Indiana's women, winding up with the top six individual efforts, claimed the team championships.
Manchester University's men open 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament play Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour with Hanover College as meet host. The women wrap up their 2016 spring campaign in the field of Franklin College's Spring Invitational over the same two days.
