NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A crowd, with ghouls and goblins interspersed throughout Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Wednesday, Oct. 30, saw a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference thriller in its own right.
The Spartans, hosting a special "Trick or Treat Night at the PERC", gave its home fans a treat with a come-from-behind five-set win over Anderson University. After the Ravens claimed a pair of 25-23 cliffhangers in the first two sets, MU (7-17 overall, 2-6 HCAC) answered with 25-19, 25-16 victories to force a fifth set. Anderson (7-18, 2-6 HCAC) held a 12-10 lead late in the decisive fifth set but a pair of kills from the outside hitting duo of freshman Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and Stephanie Barmes (Greenwood, Ind.) turned the tables en route to a 16-14 Spartans' decision and 3-2 match win.
Chowning and sophomore middle hitter Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) led the home side's offense throughout. Chowning hammered 17 kills as part of a .244 hitting percentage, while Pavelka added 13 kills. Sophomore setter Mikayla Munn (Elkhart, Ind.) came up with a big effort in the home finale, too, with 42 assists, five service aces, and three blocks. Barmes was also strong at the net on defense, blocking six Ravens' attack attempts including two solo.
MU winds up the 2013 campaign Saturday, Nov. 2, with a 2 p.m. first serve at Rose-Hulman.
NOTES: Chowning's totals moved her over 200 kills for the season. She's been on a roll of late with four consecutive and six of her last seven matches producing double figures.
