Bluffton holds off MU in HCAC play
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sophomore middle hitter Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) guided Manchester University, leading the way in kills and service aces, during a three-set loss to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Bluffton University of Ohio Wednesday, Oct. 23.
MU (6-17 overall, 1-6 HCAC) kept it close throughout. The Spartans jumped out to a 10-2 lead in set one, had set two tied 9-9 and trailed just 10-9 in the third set. However, Bluffton (11-15 overall, 3-3 HCAC) managed to overtake their guests at each turn for 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21 victories.
Pavelka rattled 11 kills at the Beavers as part of a .269 attack percentage and served up three aces from the back stripe. Freshman outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) was also in kill double digits with 10. The sophomore tandem of middle hitter Devin Clark (Madison, Ind.) and outside hitter Stephanie Barmes (Greenwood, Ind.) proved strong defensively, as Clark ended with five blocks, two of which were solo, and Barmes wound up with four.
Manchester University wraps up the home portion of its 2013 schedule Wednesday, Oct. 30, against Anderson University. First serve between the HCAC rivals is 7 p.m. A "Trick or Treat Night at the PERC" is planned with fans asked to dress in costume with raffle prizes and treats available.
NOTES – Chowning, moving five kills shy of 200, earned her fifth double-figure attack night in the last six matches … Pavelka has been on a similar roll with double-figure kills in four of her last five appearances … Clark has blocked an opponents' attack attempt in seven consecutive matches.
