NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sparkling play from the freshman-sophomore combination of outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Neb.) and middle hitter Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) lifted Manchester University to a pair of wins Saturday, Oct. 19.
Chowning and Pavelka each finished with 30-or-more kills during a four-set win over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Earlham College and a five-set thriller against Oberlin College of Ohio. Pavelka spotlighted the Senior Day 2013 afternoon with 21 kills against Oberlin, matching fellow sophomore Sarah Pruden's effort against North Park University of Illinois earlier this fall.
MU, improving to 6-16 overall and 1-4 in the conference, also picked up solid results from other areas. Sophomore middle hitter Devin Clark (Madison, Ind.) ended with 11 blocks, senior defensive specialist Makenna Hamilton (Medaryville, Ind.), who was one of two members of the Class of 2014 honored before action began, dug up 34 opponent attack attempts, and sophomore setter Mikayla Munn (Elkhart, Ind.) turned in 80 assists and five service aces. Pavelka and sophomore defensive specialist Randa Gillespie (Portland, Ind.) also tallied five service aces apiece.
The Black and Gold resume a current run of four consecutive matches on their home court of Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Wednesday, Oct. 23. Bluffton University of Ohio is the opposition for a 7 p.m. match.
