Defiance stops Black and Gold

DEFIANCE, OHIO – Freshman outside hitter Courtney Chowning (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore middle hitter Morgan Pavelka (Noblesville, Ind.) each finished with seven kills, leading Manchester University Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Spartans dropped to 4-16 overall and 0-5 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in the wake of a 25-18, 25-21, 25-11 loss at Defiance College of Ohio. Sophomore middle hitter Devin Clark (Madison, Ind.) and outside hitter Stephanie Barmes (Greenwood, Ind.) each hit above .200 (Clark – three kills, 11 attempts, .273/Barmes – four kills, two errors, nine attempts, .222), and Barmes also blocked four Yellowjacket attempts with one being solo.

MU held a 6-2 lead in the first set before DC tallied 12 of the next 17 points. The Spartans were also neck-and-neck early in the second and third sets, trailing only 8-6 and 9-6, until the Yellowjackets took off on big scoring stretches.

The Black and Gold return to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Saturday, Oct. 19. They face Earlham College in HCAC action and Oberlin College of Ohio in non-conference play. The schedule begins at 12 p.m. as part of Senior Day 2013 festivities.
