NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Fueled by singles wins at number one and six and a number one doubles victory, Manchester University gave perennial Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standout Rose-Hulman a tough test Thursday, Oct. 12.
Senior Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) continued her domination against fellow league opponents, taking a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Fightin' Engineers Anna Thompson to win her fifth in a row and move to 6-2 overall and 6-0 versus the conference. All six of her decisions versus HCAC foes have been of the straight-set variety.
Cordill and her senior teammate Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) put the first team point on the board at MU's outdoor courts for Coach Eric Christiansen's crew, winning a 9-8 thriller over Thompson and Naomi Bhagat. The visitors managed the other two doubles tallies to take a 2-1 lead in singles play and claimed four of six triumphs for the narrow 6-3 team decision. The Black and Gold's other point came from the racquet of senior Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) who took a straight-set win over Linde Schaffer at number six singles.
Manchester University (3-5 overall, 3-3 HCAC) looks to close the regular season on a high note, as they host Transylvania University Saturday, Oct. 14, as part of Homecoming 2017 festivities. First serve is 10 a.m.
