MU’s fall season winds down at HCACs

WEST INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Good results in singles' play highlighted Manchester University's outing at the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 19.

The sixth-seeded Spartans gave third-seeded Franklin College a stern test in one of two quarterfinal round duals at the West Indy Racquet Club. Senior Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) topped MU's battle, knocking off HCAC Most Valuable Player Melissa Sanders 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 for her first loss. Senior Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) kept it going at number two, winning in straight sets over Bethany Harris 6-2, 7-6, as did senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) at number five, earning her 10th victory, with a straight-set decision.

The Black and Gold's comeback attempt ended just short. FC gained wins at number three and four singles to close the dual at 5-3 after sweeping doubles' play. Senior Abby Berry (Huntington, Ind.) nearly kept it going, winning her first set 6-1 before falling 6-2, 6-1. Bower and freshman doubles partner Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) just missed helping MU (5-9) avert the Grizzlies' doubles run, taking the match at number three to a 9-8 final.
