HANOVER, IND. – Hanover College picked up all three doubles victories and five of six singles' decisions to top Manchester University 8-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual play Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Spartans, dipping to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference, gained the point from senior Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.). Leeper opened fast against the Panthers' Mackenzie Spicer, winning 6-1 in the first set and then held on in the second set for a 7-5 decision to close out the straight-set victory.
She and fellow senior Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) nearly added another point at number one doubles. Battling Spicer and Danielle Miller, they took seven games in a hard-fought 9-7 loss.
MU now awaits the outcome of Anderson University's regular season ending dual at Earlham College Wednesday, Oct. 16. A Quakers' loss sends the Spartans to next weekend's HCAC postseason tournament.
NOTES: Leeper's decision was her seventh in singles' play this fall. Six of those victories have occurred in the past 10 matches. She stands second behind fellow senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) who has nine.
