MU winds up fall home slate, tops Huntington

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Bolstered by two of three victories in doubles play, Manchester University opened the final week of the 2013 fall regular season on a positive note Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The Spartans, going to 5-7, stopped nearby non-conference rival Huntington University 5-4 on its outdoor courts. The number one pairing of seniors Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) and Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) got the dual out to a quick start with an 8-4 win, while the number three team of senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) and freshman Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) took a forfeit.

The 2-1 edge was just enough, as the two sides split the singles battles. Bower moved to 9-3 on the year with a 6-4, 6-1 decision, joining sophomore Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) and Beckner in the win column.

Manchester University takes its current two-dual win streak on the road for a meeting with Hanover College Saturday, Oct. 12. First serve at Zeddies Tennis Center is 10 a.m.
