NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A pair of scores just over two and a half minutes apart midway through the second half lifted Hanover College past Manchester University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 30.
With the host Spartans battling the perennial loop power Panthers tooth and nail over the first 65-plus minutes to a 2-1 score, the visiting side broke the contest open with successful strikes in the 68th and 70th minutes to lead them to a 5-1 victory. MU's crowd did see positives over the 90 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) knocked away an additional 11 shot on goal tries in the midst of a 32-5 shots disadvantage, and junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) broke through with her first goal of the season, off a pass from freshman defender/midfielder Alexis Beeman (O'Fallon, Mo.) in the 31st minute.
Birmingham and sophomore midfielder/forward Katie Green (Chesterton, Ind.) accounted for all five of the shot attempts for the Spartans (0-9, 0-1 HCAC). Birmingham tallied three, and Green finished with two.
Manchester University continues its current home stand, as conference rival Anderson University visits Good Field for a 3:30 p.m. start Wednesday, Oct. 4.
