Lower-weight surge guides Black and Gold

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Victories from the trio of junior 133-pounder Ben Cauffman (Fort Wayne, Ind.), senior 141-pounder Chase Wilson (Peru, Ind.) and sophomore 149-pounder Jordan Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) spotlighted Manchester University dual action Friday, Dec. 8.

Coach Kevin Lake's Spartans dipped to 1-2 with a 27-16 loss to visiting Ohio Northern University, but the home crowd at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena had plenty of reasons to be excited. Cauffman, after freshman 125-pounder Josh Stephenson (Yorktown, Ind.) dropped an 8-4 decision to the Polar Bears' Seth Transue in the opening bout, caught Derek Dolph for a fall just 10 seconds from the end of the first period, giving the Black and Gold a 6-3 team edge. The margin spread to 13-3, as Wilson rolled up eight third period points in route to a major decision, and Napier won a wild and woolly offensive clash against Schuyler Caprella 20-11.

From that point, ONU's trademark power in the upper weights came into play. The visitors garnered two falls, a technical fall, and two major decisions over the remaining six matches to produce the win. Senior 197-pounder Alex Roberts (Campbelltown, Ind.) put a halt to Ohio Northern sweeping their way through the last six with a rousing 10-5 decision.

Lake's team returns to dual competition Saturday, Dec. 16, joining the Luther College of Iowa Gator Boots Duals field at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tenn. The Spartans will face Ferrum College of Virginia, Baldwin-Wallace College of Ohio and Loras College of Iowa during the day.
