Underclassmen efforts lead way in opener

EAST LANSING, MICH. – Competing against top-flight NCAA Division I and II competition Sunday, Nov. 5, Manchester University compiled three victories during the Michigan State Spartan Open.

Freshman 125-pounder Josh Stephenson (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore 149-pounder JaVon Phillips (Centerville, Ind.) showed strong signs for Coach Kevin Lake's team. Stephenson and Phillips each took wins on the championship side of the freshman-sophomore brackets before falling out with back-to-back losses. Senior 197-pounder Alex Roberts (Campbelltown, Ind.) earned a victory in the open brackets' championship side but was also felled with back-to-back losses.

Coach Kevin Lake's team returns to action with a busy weekend Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10. They take on in-state rival Wabash College in dual competition Friday at 7 p.m. and then send individuals to the Trine University Thunder Invitational the following day for a 9:00 a.m. start.
