Championship Weekend - Spartans aim at HCACs

Keene Run Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky., is the host venue for the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14 and 15.

Tourney details: Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday … Transylvania University is the institutional host.

Spartan Shorts: Manchester University's season produced a team championship at the Mt. St. Joseph Stateline Shootout in late August/early September as part of three top fives in the four events they competed in before the HCACs. Coach Tara Boone's group is coming off a third-place finish at Earlham Sept. 30-Oct. 1 where they carded a 753 which was led individually by senior Katie Smith (Wabash, Ind.) who turned in a 179 … Smith's play has guided the Spartans to date. She averages 85 strokes per 18 and has three individual top-five finishes (third at MSJ/tied for runner-up at Hanover/and fifth at Earlham) in her bag. A pair of first-year students has made impacts, too, as Kaitlyn Cook (Monticello, Ind.) harbors a 90.2 stroke average per round and placed fourth at MSJ, while Taylor Erfman (Brookville, Ind.) has a 91-stroke average per round and was tied for fifth at Mt. St. Joseph. The trio hopes to continue a program roll which has seen them place among the top five in each of the last six years … "I have good feelings for this weekend," Boone noted. "We've played well all fall but haven't peaked yet to what we're capable of. It was average, middle of road last time at Keene Run. We can improve, as a 10-to-15 stroke positive in each round puts us right in the hunt. That can happen, too, as I like what I've seen from this group. If they have a bad round, the next day is better. If they have bad holes to start a day, they fight back even as young as they are."
