Spartan Shorts: As the curtain closes on the loop's first section, the Black and Gold (4-11 overall, 3-5 HCAC) still find themselves very much a part of the postseason tourney discussion, tied for sixth with Defiance College and Franklin College and just a game behind Mt. St. Joseph University for fifth … Sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tossed in 11 points and dished off three assists, both team bests, at Transylvania University Jan. 13. Junior guard Sara Carder (Ney, Ohio) turned in another impressive performance off the bench with eight points, second-most for MU. Freshman post player Hannah Smith (Upland, Ind.) nearly notched her first collegiate double-double, totaling seven points, and eight rebounds. Even with those numbers in tow, it wasn't enough at the Clive M. Beck Center, as the host Pioneers rallied from an early 8-3 deficit behind a 48-20 roll over the second and third periods as part of a 74-47 victory … Weaver's team-leading 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals per contest figure in well on the league numbers. Her assists average is sixth-best, while she stands ninth in steals. Junior forward/center Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is among the conference's top five in rebounding (7.4 pg – T-4) … Carder's recent three-game stretch has seen the junior tallying just shy of eight points per appearance. The roll has given her season totals a boost, as the scoring average is up over a point (.8-2.1 pg). Some of that positive is due to hitting at a 57.1 clip from outside the arc in the span.
