Close-knit HCAC semifinal battle concludes 2013-14 season
LEXINGTON, KY. – Manchester University registered another balanced scoring attack and took top-seeded Transylvania University to the wire in 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal play Saturday, March 1.
Senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.), concluding a sparkling four-year career for the Black and Gold, topped the squad in scoring with 12 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and picked off a team-high two steals. Sophomore guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) came off the bench for a strong afternoon with three three-pointers as part of an 11-point, six-rebound contest, and junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.
MU, seeing its season end at 14-13, held a four-point advantage at halftime (34-30) after an opening 20 minutes in which the lead changed hands six times. The Spartans kept the margin into the beginning of the second half before Transylvania turned the tables with a 21-11 run that gave them a 51-45 edge with just under eight minutes to go. The visitors moved as close as four (64-60) in the late stages but an 8-2 stretch for the home side, due to eight straight made free throws in the final 1:43, closed the game at 72-62.
NOTES: Hamilton ended the year with 27 straight multiple-assist games as part of a single-season school record 147 assists … The Spartans reached the conference postseason tournament's final four for the eighth time in program history.
