NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and junior guard Alyssa Smith (Bluffton, Ind.) each registered double-figure scoring efforts Saturday, Feb. 1, guiding Manchester University.
The Spartans, slipping to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, dropped a 76-54 final to league-leading Transylvania University. Meiklejohn had a strong effort on both ends of the floor with 11 points, five rebounds and five blocked shots. Smith turned in a perfect effort from the field, going six-of-six overall which included a two-of-two effort from outside the arc, as part of a 14-point, six-rebound, three-steal afternoon. Her numbers in all three categories led the Black and Gold.
MU gave the Pioneers (17-2 overall, 11-1 HCAC) a stern test throughout the opening 20 minutes. They held a three-point lead (14-11) less than six minutes in and remained close throughout the frame, trailing only 35-33 at the break. The second stanza saw the visitors open on a 17-4 run which the home side did trim to as little as 12 but could get no closer.
Manchester University resumes the second half of the 2013-14 HCAC campaign Wednesday, Feb. 5. They travel to Bluffton University of Ohio for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
NOTES: The Black and Gold remained in a tie for fifth on the conference standings with Rose-Hulman, just a game behind Bluffton for fourth … Smith's 14 points were a personal single-game career high … Junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) ran her consecutive string of multiple-assist games to 19 with a team-high five … Meiklejohn compiled her seventh multiple-blocked shot game of the season.
