Spartans, Earlham open HCAC second half
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University managed to put four players in double digits Saturday, Jan. 25, but Earlham College used a late first half run to propel itself to an 81-70 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win.
The Spartans (8-9 overall, 5-5 HCAC) opened the game quickly scoring the first six points and held a 21-14 advantage with just under 12 minutes to go in the opening half. From that point on, EC (8-9 overall, 4-6 HCAC) took off on a 14-0 stretch and didn't trail the rest of the way. MU got as close as four later in the frame and remained as close as six in the second 20 minutes but couldn't overtake its guests.
Sophomore guard Justine Kruger (Francisville, Ind.) continued her recent roll, tallying a team-high 14 points to mark her fourth double-digit effort in the last six games. Kruger also added five rebounds to her total. Junior center Alyssa Hammond (Osgood, Ind.) finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while junior guard Alyssa Smith (Bluffton, Ind.) turned in 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals, and junior forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) ended with 11 points.
MU, situated in a two-tie with Rose-Hulman for fifth place on the league standings, resumes its schedule Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Spartans travel to Franklin College's Spurlock Center for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
NOTES – Kruger has seen her scoring average rise better than two points (4.7 – 6.9) during her recent run … Junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) reeled off her 17th straight multiple-assist contest. She dished off five to move her season total to 105 … Senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) registered her sixth multiple-blocked shot appearance, swatting away two Quaker attempts.
