NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior center Alyssa Hammond (Osgood, Ind.) nearly notched a double-double Tuesday, Nov. 26, leading Manchester University in a 65-55 loss to perennial Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Calvin College.
MU, dipping to 1-3, kept itself close to the visiting Knights (3-2) throughout the evening. The first half scoreboard was knotted five times before Calvin surged on a 9-2 run in the final 2:32 to lead 39-31 at the break. The visitors opened an 11-point lead early in the second frame, but the Black and Gold proved resilient, whittling the margin to three twice in the closing stages. Calvin finally pulled away with a 12-5 roll in the last 3:27.
Hammond tallied 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Justine Kruger (Francisville, Ind.) also tallied a big night's effort on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds as part of a 37-27 team lead on the glass. Junior guard Alyssa Smith (Bluffton, Ind.) added 10 points and three steals.
Manchester University opens the 2013-14 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate Wednesday, Dec. 4. The Spartans travel to Defiance College of Ohio for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
