SPARTAN SHORTS: Coach Josh Dzurick's squad has been in action already this season, playing NCAA Division I opponent Indiana University – Purdue University – Indianapolis Nov. 4 in an exhibition contest. The Spartans held early advantages of 3-1 and 10-9 through the first six minutes inside The Jungle on IUPUI's campus. Even when the Jaguars, picked second on The Summit League's coaches' preseason coaches' poll, made a big move midway through the opening frame to lead by 20 with just over six minutes left, MU held steady and trailed only 33-17 with just over five and a half minutes to go before halftime. From there, a 16-3 run by the home side closed the first 20 minutes at 49-20, and IUPUI moved on to an 86-28 decision … Senior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) got her year off to a strong start with a team-high 14 points on better than 50 percent shooting from the field (five-of-nine) and a good effort at the charity stripe (four-for-five). Junior guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) canned an early three-point bucket as part of a five-point night and dished out a team-high two assists. Junior forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore center Stephanie Barmes (Greenwood, Ind.) each grabbed an MU-high four rebounds and also blocked an IUPUI shot attempt … With the three top scorers and two of the top three rebounders back from 2012-13, fans of the Spartans eagerly await the new year. "I like the chemistry we have so far," Dzurick said. "There are positives from the veterans and newcomers, and we have some good leadership with Lang and Meiklejohn. The freshmen have come in and worked very hard as well. It all comes down to how well we work together and gel as a team."
Non-Conference Slate Resumes: Following Saturday's game, MU continues its pre-HCAC slate Saturday, Nov. 23, with a 3 p.m. tip-off at the University of Chicago. The Black and Gold return home to clash with perennial regional and national power Calvin College of Michigan Tuesday, Nov. 26, as part a doubleheader with the Spartans' men's team.
