LEXINGTON, KY. – Junior third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) doubled and homered as part of a two-hit, three-RBI afternoon at Transylvania University's John and Donna Hall Saturday, April 28.
Skeens blasted a three-run bomb, her fifth of the season, to highlight a four-run fifth inning rally in game two. She was one of four Black and Gold players with multiple-hit efforts during an 11-4 defeat. Senior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) crunched three doubles, scored once and drove in a run; sophomore first baseman Makenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind.) tallied two safeties; and junior catcher Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind.) singled twice and scored.
The 11-hit outburst for Coach Josh Dzurick's squad came on the heels of being two-hit by one of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's, Great Lakes region's and NCAA Division III' top pitchers in the Pioneers' Renae Morton. Morton had MU (17-19 overall, 9-7 HCAC) no-hit into the seventh before Thompson and Ladwig broke it up with back-to-back singles.
Despite being swept by the league champions, the Spartans season didn't end in the Bluegrass State. They earned one of the five spots in the postseason loop tourney set for Friday through Sunday, May 4-6, at Transylvania University.
