Busy span begins with MIAA opponents

Inclement early spring weather in the northeast Indiana forecast has forced movement on the 2017 Manchester University softball schedule.

Game details: The Spartans (7-9-1 overall), winners of seven of their last nine, take to the road for a non-conference doubleheader, originally set for Monday, March 27, against St. Mary's College Tuesday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. and host fellow Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Alma College Thursday, March 30, with a 3:30 first pitch at Spartan Field … Live statistics are accessible for the meetings against the Belles, while live audio, stats and video can be tracked for each game versus the Scots at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Josh Dzurick's squad hopes its recent Sunshine State success equates to something similar in the Midwest. The Black and Gold hit .311 as a team as reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.) turned in a .467 stretch to lead six starters at .300 or above. Freshman first baseman Shakira Perez (Elkhart, Ind.) and sophomore shortstop Mandy Boggs (Frankfort, Ind.) were next at .367 each; senior outfielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.) had a big break week hitting at a .357 clip; junior outfielder Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.) finished the span at .333; and sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) tallied a .321 mark over the nine games. The pitching staff was just as strong, surrendering only a 1.51 earned run average with junior Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) leading the charge behind a 5-0 record, 1.86 ERA and 19 strikeouts which included a complete-game shutout, the first of her collegiate career … Several Spartans dot the current Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference statistics. Skeens is tied for fourth in RBI (14); Ladwig's five doubles are tied for sixth, she and Skeens are tied for fifth with two home runs each, she joins Jennings as one of 17 players to hit a triple, her 19 hits are tied for fourth-most, and her .388 batting average is just outside the top 10 (No. 12); Perez' fleet resume on the base paths has her tied for eighth in stolen bases (six); and Walter's five pitching wins are third-highest, her 2.48 ERA ranks eighth and the 24 strikeouts she's registered stand sixth … Looking deeper into the statistics, Jennings owns a nine-game hit streak, and Ladwig has reached base safely in 10 straight appearances.

HCAC Opener: Mt. St. Joseph is scheduled to visit Spartan Field Saturday, April 1, for the league opener for both teams. First pitch is 1 p.m.
