Manchester University begins a slate of 10 games in six days in Fort Meyers, Fla., Sunday, March 19.
Game details: Coach Josh Dzurick's squad, looking to turn around early-season fortunes that have them standing 0-7-1, take on North Central College of Illinois at 2 p.m. and Crown College of Minnesota at 5 p.m. They'll become familiar with both opponents during the span, as they face the Cardinals out of the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin twice and the Storm from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference three times. Manchester University will also take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in four contests and face local junior college Florida Southwestern State.
Spartan Shorts: Junior outfielder Mikayla Deisler (Goshen, Ind.) is out to a fast start, hitting .500, good for second-highest in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at this point of the season. Her seven safeties are tied with sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) for the team lead, too. Looking further into the Black and Gold's statistics, Skeens is also atop the doubles category, along with junior second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.), at two, while Ladwig is the home run leader having crunched the lone round tripper of the season to tie former standout Amy Hommema for first on the career list (20). In the circle, junior Madisyn Walter (Hanna, Ind.) is at the front of the staff in earned run average (3.55) and strikeouts (five) … The Spartans look to recapture the same form they had on last season's southern sojourn where they won eight of 10 games in Florida. It was the program's first .500-or-better Sunshine State finish since the 2013 team went 4-4.
