Due to a scheduled doubleheader against Adrian College of Michigan, set for Saturday, March 11, at Centre College in Danville, Ky., being cancelled due to weather issues, Manchester University's slate changed earlier this week. The Spartans now host Taylor University out of the Crossroads League of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Thursday, March 9, and travel to Centre for a double-dip against the Praying Colonels Sunday, March 12.
Game details: First pitch against the Trojans is today at 3 p.m. at Spartan Field, while Coach Josh Dzurick's squad faces off against Centre of the Southern Athletic Association at 1 p.m. on the CC softball field Sunday … Live statistics are available for both games against Taylor, while live statistics and video are available for the Centre games via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics.
Spartan Shorts: Dzurick's team, standing 0-3-1, began its week playing a pair of contests at Kalamazoo College March 7. Late rallies in both ends of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference – Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader for host Hornets subdued the Spartans. The visitors tied it at 1-1 after a run-scoring single by sophomore third baseman Kate Skeens (Gas City, Ind.) in the third inning of the opener before Kalamazoo rolled up five runs over the fifth and sixth for a 6-1 decision. The nightcap saw the Spartans hold a 3-1 edge after five and a half and 4-3 lead after six and half but, in each case, the home bats answered the bell for a 5-4 victory. Skeens finished her afternoon at KC's softball field with three safeties in six at-bats. She was joined by fellow sophomore Krystal Sellers (Bourbon, Ind.) at the top of the offensive chart, as she was two-for-three with two RBIs and drilled a double in the second game as a designated hitter … Sellers' .500 batting average, which features a double as part of a .667 slugging percentage, tops a trio at .440 or above. Skeens (.417) is second, and junior outfielder Mikayla Deisler (Goshen, Ind.) is third (.400). Sellers' two RBI are first as well, while Skeens' two doubles lead the way. In the circle, junior hurler Madisyn Walter's (Hanna, Ind.) 2.15 earned run average is at the front of the staff. Her four strikeouts also pace the group.
