NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sophomore pitcher/infielder/designated player MacKenzie Williams (Kendallville, Ind.) slammed a solo home run and pieced together a strong pitching effort against Olivet College of Michigan Saturday, April 19.
Williams' team-lead tying fourth round tripper of the year cut the visiting Comets' advantage to 3-1 after two frames in the nightcap. She kept her teammates close on the scoreboard on the hill, weaving through a potent opposing line-up and retiring seven straight at one point from the third through fifth frames. Olivet, moving to 22-9 on the season, managed to break the game open with a four-run rally in the sixth behind five hits. MU (9-19) rallied with a run in the sixth off an RBI single from sophomore outfielder/catcher/designated player Kaile Niezgodski (South Bend, Ind.) but couldn't close any further in a 7-2 loss.
In game one, the Black and Gold got a quick start, leading 1-0 after two frames. A bases-loaded walk to senior second baseman Alicia Cleveland (Lagrange, Ind.) pushed across the score. Olivet answered with four in the third and six in the fourth en route to an 11-1, five-inning victory.
Manchester University resumes a current run of eight successive home games Monday, April 21. They continue competition against the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association St. Mary's College of Indiana. Game time at Spartan Field is 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Williams increased her team-leading hit streak to 11 straight games. She also has an 11-game on-base streak in tow.
