Franklin, Hanover visit Spartan Field this weekend

The 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate resumes Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6, against Franklin College and Hanover College.

Weekend specifics: First pitch times are 2:30 p.m. Saturday versus Franklin and 1 p.m. Sunday versus Hanover at Spartan Field … Live statistics for both doubleheaders can be accessed via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … Manchester University, standing 3-11 overall and 0-2 in league play going into the weekend, honors its four-person Class of 2014 prior to Sunday's games. Third baseman Kylie Planck (Valparaiso, Ind.), first baseman/designated player Janikka Tillotson (Brownsburg, Ind.), catcher/designated player Kirby Glancy (Hartford City, Ind.) and second baseman Alicia Cleveland (Lagrange, Ind.) have been part of the program's first HCAC championship, hosting a conference postseason tournament as part of two tourney appearances and a 20-plus-wins campaign during their MU careers.

Spartan Shorts: The Black and Gold battled league-leading Anderson University on the road April 1 to begin the week. AU pieced together a late-innings comeback in the nightcap for an 8-5 decision and broke up a pitchers' duel in the late stages of the opener for a 5-1 win … MU turned in a 13-hit attack with four extra base safeties to highlight the doubleheader. Sophomore infielder/pitcher MacKenzie Williams (Kendallville, Ind.) and junior pitcher/infielder Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.) each delivered home runs, while Planck and freshman outfielder Megan Stouder (Bremen, Ind.) added two-baggers for the Spartan offense. Williams joined Planck with a team-best three hits in the twinbill …. Three Spartans, freshman infielder Chloe Hensley (South Bend, Ind.), Cleveland and junior outfielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.), top the offense through 14 games. Hensley's .316 batting average is first, while Cleveland (.313) and Stephan (.306) close behind. Stephan, Planck and sophomore designated player/catcher/outfielder Kaile Niezgodski (South Bend, Ind.) each have 11 hits with eight of Niezgodski's total going for extra bases. Niezgodski is also first in runs-batted-in with seven … The series with Franklin has been very even dating back through 2007 with splits being the norm three times in the span. MU has claimed 10 of the last 12 against Hanover including a doubleheader sweep at HC last spring.

Homestand Continues: Defiance College of Ohio comes to Spartan Field Wednesday, April 9. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
