CLERMONT, FLA. – Junior center fielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.) collected three hits and scored one of Manchester University's five runs in a non-conference clash with Trinity College of Connecticut Saturday, March 15.
The Spartans, kicking off their annual spring trip to the Sunshine State, nearly rallied from a 4-0 deficit against their opposition from the New England Small College Athletic Conference. They tallied four runs over the second and third innings to trim the deficit to 5-4 and added a run in their last at-bat to make it 6-5. However, a two-out lined rocket off the bat of freshman infielder Seanna Redman (Logansport, Ind.) wound up just foul with fellow freshman Taylor Spangle (Leesburg, Ind.) in scoring position, and Trinity starting pitcher Hannah King closed the game with a strikeout.
Sophomore pitcher MacKenzie Williams (Kendallville, Ind.), working around eight Bantam hits and five walks, kept her team close throughout with three strikeouts. She also was strong at the plate with an RBI double in the seventh. Fellow underclasswomen Ashley Stahl, a sophomore outfielder from Wheatland, Ind., and freshman outfielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.) also drove in runs for the Spartans' offense.
The opener saw Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham of New York bolt out to a 5-0 lead after one frame en route to a 15-1, five-inning decision. Williams singled and scored the lone Black and Gold run, while sophomore designated player Jessica Chorak (Hammond, Ind.) drove in a run.
MU (1-3) continues its Florida stay Sunday, March 15. They face SUNY-Geneseo at 1 p.m. and William Paterson at 3 p.m.
