CLERMONT, FLA. – Manchester University turned in a split during the second day of its 2013 Florida spring break trip Sunday, March 16.
The Spartans, going to 2-4 on the season, toppled the State University of New York – Geneseo 8-1 in the opener and were defeated by William Paterson University of New Jersey 14-0 in five innings in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher/infielder MacKenzie Williams (Kendallville, Ind.) fired a complete-game, four-hit, five-strikeout effort to lead the way in the win.
MU's offense rattled SUNY-Geneseo pitching early with six runs in the first and then two in the second. Williams aided her own cause with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while senior third baseman Kylie Planck (Valparaiso, Ind.), junior outfielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.) and junior first baseman Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.) each added RBIs.
In game two, WPU pushed across two in the first and six in the second to open the lead up early. Five different Black and Gold players collected a hit apiece.
MU's varsity breaks from action until Tuesday, March 18. They will face off against the University of Massachusetts-Boston and UW-Stevens Point at 9 and 11 a.m. The Spartans' junior varsity takes to the National Training Center Complex fields Monday, March 17, to take on Indiana Tech at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Planck takes a four-game hitting and on-base streak into Tuesday's games, while freshman outfielder Emilee Liston (Cicero, Ind.) harbors a four-game on base roll … Through six games, Nash has a team-best two multiple-hit contests.
