Black and Gold turn in strong effort
HUNTINGTON, IND. – Fueled by four individual runner-up results, Manchester University compiled 107 points at the Huntington University Relays Saturday, April 5.
On the track, senior Jonathon Caffarelli (Lansing, Ill.) claimed second in the 1500 meter run. His time of 4:05.2 was less than three seconds off the winning time in a 25-runner field.
MU's remaining runner-up marks went to the field events. Juniors Austin Finley (Kokomo, Ind.), in the triple jump (12.43 meters), and Stephen Coble (Edwardsburg, Mich.) in the discus and shot put (40.86 meters/13.77 meters), gathered the results. They each narrowly missed getting more top two finishes, as Coble was a narrow third in the hammer with his top toss of 44.35 meters leaving him only six-tenths of a meter short, while Finley was in a close-knit top five in the 100 with his time of 11.49 seconds being only 28-hundredths shy of the top two clockings.
MU's team point total left them third in seven-team field. Indiana Wesleyan edged the host Foresters 168-152 for first.
The Spartans resume the outdoor campaign Saturday, April 12 at the Indiana State Division III Championships. DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., is the meet host.
