Spartans seek more early-season success

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Weekend two of the 2018 season features a trip to Trine University in Angola, Ind.

Meet details: Manchester University's men's and women's indoor track and field squads are among the team rosters at TU's Keith Turner Alumni Invitational Saturday, Jan. 20 … Events begin at 10 a.m. inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Sports and Recreation Center on Trine's campus.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Brian Cashdollar's squads were each picked for top-five finishes in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll, released Monday, Jan. 15. MU's women earned 87 points and one first-place vote for second, while the men totaled 65 points for fifth. Defending champions Rose-Hulman was picked to continue their strings at Anderson University next month. Senior Paige Keller (Greenville, Ohio), juniors Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.), Dasia Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Jade Bollet (Dekalb, Ind.) and sophomore Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) were noted in the women's "Athletes to Watch" section … Those first five selections are given some early merit, as three of the four individual event winners at the season-opening Rose-Hulman Duals, were atop the conference performance list. The men's 4x200 meter relay of freshmen Travis Murr (Franklin, Ind.) and Nathan Weaver (Goshen, Ind.), junior Austin Coughlin (Fairland, Ind.) and senior Harrison Hollis (Lebanon, Ind.) 1:35.16 led the league as did Wappes' 800 time (2:22.81) and junior Laina Boggs' (Frankfort, Ind.) 37-foot, three-inch toss in the shot put. Looking deeper on the loop sheets, Hollis and Murr were two-three in the 60 (7.14 seconds); sophomore Austin Roberts (Indianapolis, Ind.) was second in the long jump (20 feet, a quarter inch); Murr was first in the 200 (23.32); and the women's 4x200 was second-fastest (1:58.19) … The first meet positives didn't end there. Wappes found herself among the NCAA Division III top 10 in the 800 (No. 9 - time converted to 2:21.19 due to track size) … Several Black and Gold athletes look for continued success at Trine. Keller is the reigning pole vault champion; sophomore Austin Jones (Lapel, Ind.) captured the high jump last season; and Wappes, fellow sophomore Emily Ewen (Wolcott, Ind.) and Beck on the distance medley relay were part of event championships for the women. On the men's side, Hollis and Roberts were runners-up in the 60 and long jump, respectively.
