MU takes aim at HCACs

Manchester University looks to continue its strong 2013 slate by competing at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, Feb. 16. The meet, hosted by Defiance College of Ohio, is set 12 p.m. inside the George M. Smart Athletic Center on Defiance's campus.

Spartan Shorts: Manchester University earned a pair of top five finishes a year ago with the men ending third and the women taking fifth. … Coach Brian Cashdollar's teams have several individuals looking to repeat successes from the 2012 meet. Junior Andrea Keller (Greenville, Ohio) was runner-up in the pole vault at Rose-Hulman last February for the women, while the men are the defending champions in the distance medley relay with all four individuals back in senior Zeth Baker (Waterloo, Ind.), juniors Kyle Davis (Crown Point, Ind.) and Mike Stocker (Yorktown, Ind.) and sophomore Ryan Marshall (Laotto, Ind.) from the winning group. Sophomore Austin Finley (Kokomo, Ind.) was runner-up in the high jump, and sophomore Alex Lissade-Gardner (Indianapolis, Ind.) ended in the top three in the long and triple jumps. … Going into the weekend, MU has a combined 10 events among the top three on the current HCAC performance list. The Black and Gold's leaders are sophomore Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.), the reigning league women's Field Athlete of the Week, in the triple jump; the men's DMR; and Baker in the men's mile. Rounding out the top three marks are sophomore Brianna Martinez (Schererville, Ind.) in the 800 and the mile; junior Curtis Nordmann (Bourbon, Ind.) and senior Karla Mardigal (Elkhart, Ind.) in the 3000; Nordmann and fellow junior Jon Cafarelli (Lansing, Ill.) in the 5000; the women's DMR; and Rowe in the high jump. … Baker goes into the meet ranking within the top 35 in the mile on the NCAA's Division III national list, too, while the men's distance medley relay is in the top 25. … Cashdollar's teams claimed three women's event titles and two men's event titles at Anderson University's The Raven Invitational Feb. 9 in recent action. Those totals were part of a strong recent run for MU, as the Spartans have set individual event records in each of the last two meets.

Southern Swing: Manchester University competes in Anderson University's Karadtzke Center for the third time this year Saturday, Feb. 23. They join the field for the Fred Wilt Invitational.
