CINCINNATI, OHIO - Behind a sparkling performance in singles' competition, Manchester University received their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Association and overall dual victory Saturday April 19, taking down the College of Mount St. Joseph 5-4.
MU found themselves down 2-1 starting singles play, despite a strong 8-4 victory by juniors Phil Truitt (Huntington, Ind.) and Alex Winger (Warsaw, Ind.) at the two spot over opponents Kyle Haas and Tony Fallace. The Spartans proved exceptionally tough in singles play taking four of the six victories across the board.
Freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) shut down opponent William Kroll at the one single, allowing just four games in the 6-4, 6-0 defeat. Winger continued his dominance at the four spot surrendering just two games, 6-0, 6-2, while senior Miro Arguijo III (Corpus Christi, Texas) helped conclude the Black and Gold's day with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Mount's Haas.
The Spartans (1-11 overall, 1-5 HCAC) will be back in action Thursday April 24. They visit HCAC foe Franklin College with a 5 p.m. start.
NOTES: Winger moved into second on the team's singles' wins list with his third overall and second successive decision … He and Truitt have also earned back-to-back wins in doubles play. They are first on the team in victories, too.
