MISHAWAKA, IND. – Freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) captured a straight-set win at number one singles, and Manchester University picked up wins at number two and three doubles to spotlight a non-conference dual at Bethel College Wednesday, April 9.
Smith, improving to 3-6, topped the Pilots' Ethan Turner 6-1, 6-4. He was joined by the number two doubles' team of juniors Phil Truitt (Huntington, Ind.) and Alex Winger (Warsaw, Ind.) and the number three doubles' pairing of freshman Trent Baker (Edwardsburg, Mich.) and sophomore Matt Buncich (Goshen, Ind.) in compiling the Spartans' three wins in a 6-3 defeat.
Truitt and Winger rolled to an 8-1 decision, while Baker and Buncich were just as impressive winning 8-2. MU held a 2-1 lead after the doubles' competition before the hosts turned it around with five of six singles' decisions.
The Spartans' women's squad began a brief three-dual spring schedule, falling 9-0 to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' regional power Bethel team. Sophomore Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) led the individual efforts taking her opponent at number three singles to a superbreaker.
MU's men return to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, April 12. They go to Terre Haute, Ind., for a meeting with the league-leading Fightin' Engineers at 10 a.m.
