DEFIANCE, OHIO – Manchester University resumed Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual action Wednesday, April 2, with freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) nearly helping the Black and Gold avoid a 9-0 loss.
Smith, playing number one singles, battled back against Defiance College's Mike Ross after a 6-4 first set defeat to win the second set 6-0. He managed six points in the superbreak, but Ross hung on for the 10-6 win to take the match. He and senior doubles partner Miro Arguijjo III (Corpus Christi, Tex.) pushed Ross and Ryan Nelson to extra games at number one, falling 9-7.
Sophomore Matt Buncich (Goshen, Ind.) and freshman Trevor Jones (Connersville, Ind.) also made a bid at getting a Spartans' team point. They gave the Yellowjackets' James Demeo and Tory Savage all they could handle in an 8-6 final at number three doubles.
MU (0-8 overall, 0-3 HCAC) returns to action Monday, April 7. They begin a three-dual week hosting Indiana University – East.
