ANDERSON, IND. - A come-from-behind victory at Anderson University highlighted Manchester University's season finale Tuesday, April 30.
The Spartans, wrapping up the 2012-13 season at 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, defeated the Ravens 5-4. MU climbed back after starting singles play at a 2-1 deficit following doubles action.
Their lone doubles' win was from the number one slot as junior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) and sophomore Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) topped Anderson's Drew Lovern and Connor Whiteside 8-2. Manchester University showed strength in singles play, coming away with victories at four of the six spots. Leading the way was Lahman at one singles fighting back to defeat Lovern 7-5, 6-2, and Swaby earning an easy win at two singles over the Raven's Whiteside 6-3, 6-3. The Spartans' comeback was finalized by junior Miro Arguijo (Corpus Christi, Tex.) finishing off opponent Brock Bell in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and sophomore Alex Winger (Warsaw, Ind.) taking a win at number six.
MU also faced off with HCAC champion Earlham College at AU's courts. The Quakers won each singles match to end the dual at a 6-0 final.
NOTES: Lahman's win against Anderson moved him to double digits for the season, as he finished with a 10-5 record. He concluded the year winning eight of 10. Swaby was second in singles' victories with a 7-9 mark, closing the season on a 6-4 roll. … Lahman and Swaby finished doubles' play at 9-5, thanks to seven wins in their last 10 matches. The freshman combo of Ryan Hawkins (LaPorte, Ind.) and Winger ended at 3-3.
