FORT WAYNE, IND.- Manchester University stepped out of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday April 25, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., for a dual with the University of St. Francis.
MU, improving to 4-9 with their third win in their last four duals, held off the host Cougars 5-4. The victory concluded a season series sweep for the Spartans over USF.
The Spartans showed power in their doubles line up, jumping ahead 2-1 going into singles play. The one doubles team of junior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) and sophomore Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) continued their impressive doubles run with their fifth consecutive victory, a hard-fought 9-8 decision over Tate Dishman and Payton Selking. The three doubles team of sophomore Alex Winger (Warsaw, Ind.) and freshman Ryan Hawkins (LaPorte, Ind.) also earned a win by a 9-7 count over USF's Michael Thompson and Spencer Heise.
Manchester University's dual win was sealed in singles play. Lahman, earning his fifth straight decision, closed out Ryan Mey in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at number one, while Hawkins also defeated opponent Kyle Andrews in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 at number six. Swaby, picking up his fourth consecutive win, registered the fifth point for the Black and Gold, taking a thrilling three-set match from Selking. He rallied back after a 6-1 first set loss to win 6-2 and 6-0 in the second and third sets.
The Spartans continue HCAC play Saturday, April 27, with their home season finale against Rose-Hulman. First serve is 12 p.m. at MU's courts.
