Spartan Shorts: It was a just what the doctor ordered kind of afternoon for MU Wednesday. The host Spartans, in high need of a victory, got the elixir in front of a crowd of better than 75 fans that braved the soggy and cold weather. Coach Corey Brueggeman's side delivered a balanced attack with five different players tallying goals in support of senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) and his 10th career clean sheet. Keeping the pressure on the visiting Grizzlies throughout, MU jumped out to an early lead when junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) curled around a defender outside the box and hammered a shot that eluded FC netminder Garrett Belden into the left side of the goal for a 1-0 edge in the sixth minute. The Spartans weren't finished in the first 45, as junior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.) and sophomore forward Adrian Mulenga (Avon, Ind.) posted scores inside the final 10 minutes for a 3-0 halftime lead. Brueggeman's bunch didn't stop there, either, as sophomore defender Nash Walker (West Lafayette, Ind.) and junior midfielder Nate Johnson (Portage, Ind.) registered goals in the early stages of the second half to wrap up the final. Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) made himself a well-known commodity in the Franklin end of the field with nine total shots of which three were on goal. His attempt totals led a 35-12 home team advantage … The scoring balance against FC translates into more of the same on the season statistics. Gonzalez, Niederhelman, senior defender/forward/midfielder Tod Oram (Crown Point, Ind.) and DeWitt each have tallied two-or-more goals this season with senior midfielder Travis Richardson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) joining Johnson, Mulenga, and Walker with a goal apiece … Moving into the final two weeks of the regular season, MU does have a presence on the league's statistical top five. Forman's 68 saves are third-highest, while Gonzalez' 40 shots rank second. The duo also finds themselves in the top 10 of save percentage (Forman – No. 6 – 79.1); goals-against average (Forman – No. 7 – 1.41); points (Gonzalez – T-10th – nine); and assists (Gonzalez – T-6th – three).
Next Up: The Spartans wrap up three in a row at home, hosting Defiance College Wednesday, Oct. 18. Match time is 3:30 p.m.
