Defiance holds off strong second half effort
DEFIANCE, OHIO – For a second successive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match, Manchester University proved a tough test in the second 45 minutes Tuesday, Oct. 15.
After host Defiance College tallied a goal amidst a 12-1 shots advantage in the first stanza, MU (1-10-2 overall, 0-4 HCAC) battled back in the second half. The Spartans held a 9-5 edge in shots and had two tries knocked away by Yellowjackets' keeper Sean Roberts to preserve a narrow 1-0 decision.
The freshman duo of forward/midfielder Ola Ladapo (London, England) and midfielder Matthew Jordan (Zionsville, Ind.) turned in a shot on goal each to lead the offense. Jordan was also one of four Black and Gold players, joining freshmen forward/midfielders Chris Hosier (Kokomo, Ind.) and Tyler Kuzdas (LaPorte, Ind.) and junior forward Loic Youth (Detroit, Mich.), with two total shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julio Luevano (Aguascalientes, Mexico) kept it close for the Black and Gold for fourth straight match. He turned in five saves in the face of a 17-10 shots edge for the home team.
MU returns to Spartan Field for Senior Day 2013 festivities Saturday, Oct. 19. Kickoff against Earlham College is set for 3 p.m. with defender/midfielder Matthew Gray (Anderson, Ind.), defender Matthew Suderman (Bluffton, Ohio), forward/midfielder Bertin Gisagara (Mishawaka, Ind.), and senior forward/midfielder Connor Seavers (Auburn, Ind.) being recognized at halftime.
