Spartans snap skid with shutout
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Senior defender/midfielder/forward Cody Freels (Auburn, Ind.) posted a goal less than a minute and-a-half in to guide Manchester University to a 1-0 non-conference win over Andrews University Tuesday, Sept. 25.
Freels, compiling a team-best five overall and two shots on goal, hammered a try that spun wildly past Cardinals' goalkeeper Victor Cabral at the 1:19 mark of the first half. Freels' second goal of the season was also his second game-winning strike.
Manchester University, stopping a five-match loss skein to move to 2-8, out-shot the visitors 26-17. Freels' totals were followed by freshman defender/midfielder Drew Vergonet (Elkhart, Ind.) and senior midfielder Dian Radev (Burgas, Bulgaria) who had three shot attempts each.
Cabral and MU senior keeper Grant Noakes (LaPorte, Ind..) made things difficult against their opposing offenses. Cabral tallied six saves, while Noakes, registering his first shutout of the year and sixth of his career, ended with seven saves.
Coach Dave Good's squad moves into the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference section of its 2012 schedule Saturday, Sept. 29. The Spartans travel to Hanover College for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
