NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University scored 22 of the game's first 29 points and didn't look back en route to an 83-59 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Earlham College Saturday, Jan. 25.
The Black and Gold, wrapping up a 2-0 week and moving to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the league, was red hot from the field throughout. They hit over 54 percent from the field overall (25 of 46) and just under 60 percent (10 of 17) from beyond the arc.
"We got out to a fast start which is what we wanted … being up by double digits just over four minutes in," MU coach Brad Nadborne. "We kept on building (the lead) with the way the offense was working, too.
"The players are stepping up at each turn," he added. "Whether its individual workouts, team practices, shootarounds … they are taking responsibility to make themselves better all the way around. It's neat to see this young team coming together."
The junior-sophomore duo of forward Jon Thompson (Rushville, Ind.) and guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) continued their torrid offensive numbers. Thompson posted a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists. Dolezal added 23 points and three steals. Freshman guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) was the third MU Spartan player in double figures with 14 points to go with six rebounds.
MU, sitting just a game out of a three-way tie for fifth, begins a key league week Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Grizzlies of Franklin College visit Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
NOTES: Dolezal's numbers for the week included hitting better than 80 percent (16 of 20) from the field and beyond the arc (five-of-six) and nearly 90 percent from the charity stripe (16-of-18) to average 26.5 ppg … Thompson was just as impressive. He nearly ended with a double-double (22.5 ppg/8.5 rpg).
